Dallas Cowboys should sign experienced defensive tackle Linval Joseph

The Dallas Cowboys have been extremely active in recent days, adding much-needed depth to their defensive line. After signing defensive tackle Jordan Phillips on Wednesday, the Cowboys signed edge rusher Carl Lawson on Thursday morning. The Cowboys’ defense immediately improved significantly in terms of experience and skill on the defensive front. But they shouldn’t stop there.

There’s another veteran who could be the icing on the cake in the Cowboys’ recent defensive revamp. Linval Joseph, who spent the 2023 season with the Buffalo Bills, makes perfect sense for Dallas. Joseph joined the Minnesota Vikings in 2014 and played there for six seasons. His head coach during that time was Mike Zimmer, the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator. That makes Joseph very familiar with Zimmer’s defensive targets, and he shined with four seasons of three or more sacks, including consecutive Pro Bowl nominations in 2016 and 2017. Zimmer is known for his huge defensive tackles, and at 6-foot-4 and 330 pounds, Joseph fits that criteria.

Joseph has battled many injuries over the years, which is why he has been on the field intermittently over the past few years. When healthy, he is another key player the Cowboys can use on the interior. Phillips is extremely athletic for a 6’6″ and 325 pound man, which allows him to play in all lineups. He can even play alongside Mazi Smith and give Osa Odighizuwa a breather when needed. Adding Joseph will be another anchor on the interior who can help tremendously in running situations and give Dallas more options in their rotation.

Joseph won’t cost the Cowboys much either, which is another reason to pursue this move. Yes, the Cowboys have improved their defensive front, but Zimmer said they need “noses,” plural. Get Joseph in the building and secure the middle of the defense for at least 2024.
