Caleb Williams impresses with his last drive in the second quarter against the Bengals

Caleb Williams had a slow start in Saturday’s warmup game against the Bengals, but he finished the first half with flying colors.

Williams ran for a 7-yard touchdown to cap a strong eight-play, 90-yard drive late in the second quarter that featured some outstanding plays from the young quarterback.

On second-and-10 from Chicago’s 48-yard line, Williams rushed out of the pocket, ran left, and then threw the ball far down the left sideline, right into the arms of fellow rookie Rome Odunze, who gained 45 yards.

Odunze could have scored a touchdown on the next play if he had stayed in the back of the end zone, but after Williams was able to evade the rush and fire a precise throw while running, Odunze’s feet were out of bounds.

Williams was still able to finish the drive with a big score as he again evaded the defenders in the backfield, moved left and picked up the ball himself for the 7-yard touchdown.

It was a strong finish to an unspectacular half for Williams and the Bears offense. The team started with three three-and-outs, including one that resulted in an intentional grounding penalty on Williams for throwing with no receiver in the zone.

On the fourth drive, Williams helped Tyler Scott incur a pass interference penalty on defense with a solid deep ball. But after the foul put the Bears in the red zone, Chicago went back with a penalty and a sack and settled for a field goal.

Williams finished his day completing 6 of 13 passes for 75 yards and a 7-yard touchdown run. He played the entire first half.
