The Tineco Floor One S5 makes vacuuming and mopping significantly more efficient

Five years ago, Chris Evans posted a humorous tweet that went viral complaining about how virtually every new piece of technology has “smart” features. “You guys are really getting on all of our nerves,” he quipped. As someone who also has no interest in smart features, he summed up my thoughts pretty well. (Honestly, that was the closest I could ever get to a buff millionaire.)

But the Tineco Floor One S5 2-in-1 Vacuum and Mop is one of the few “smart” products I’ve really liked. Using Tineco’s proprietary “iLoop Smart Sensor Technology,” the device can adjust suction power, roller speed, and water flow. This results in a remarkably seamless cleaning experience where all you have to worry about at the moment is rolling the product back and forth.

Before we go any further, I must confess that I initially started this testing process somewhat ignorantly, as the only high-end vacuum I’ve used before was an iRobot, so I assumed you could switch between vacuuming and mopping at will, but instead the Floor One S5 can do both at once. This means it wasn’t 100 percent useful on three flights of carpeted stairs, but ultimately that’s my own fault for not doing more research.

It’s a worthwhile trade-off, though, as it can’t be stressed enough how convenient it is to be able to use the dual vacuum and mop functions at the same time. Not only is it easy to pick up and rolls nice and smoothly across the floor, but it also cleans excellently. I was particularly impressed with its streak-free mopping, which Tineco says is due to the special brush head design. As for vacuuming, my mom found the Floor One S5 to be particularly good in areas with high concentrations of dust, such as under her bed. (On the few occasions it didn’t immediately pick up all the dust fluff, a second throw did the job successfully.)

And back to the smart technology we mentioned earlier, the vacuum cleaner has an “iLoop” color LED display ring that gives you real-time information. Here you’ll find the battery life as well as the cleaning mode you’re in (“Auto” for basic cleaning, “Max” for more stubborn messes, and “Suction Mode” for picking up liquids and other wet messes without mopping). In general, though, the Floor One S5 is efficient enough to clean in Auto mode. I never had to switch to Max.

The best thing about this indicator, however, is that it uses a loop of increasing red to mark particularly dirty areas. This is a clever way to see where certain parts of your home are particularly prone to getting dirty. I can imagine this being even more useful for people with kids or pets who leave all sorts of spills on the floor. You can also download the free Tineco Life companion app for Android and iOS to get weekly cleaning reports, volume control, and thankfully, a “silent” option for the admittedly (and sometimes annoyingly) chatty automated voice.

Maintenance is also really easy. The automated voice tells you when to return it to the base for self-cleaning and from there all you have to do is empty the dirty water tank. The noise it makes when self-cleaning is also thankfully not that loud, unlike the iRobot I used which sounded like a jet engine when emptying its dirt bag. Removing and reattaching this tank, as well as the tank on the back for clean water and/or Tineco’s cleaning solution, is also hassle-free.

My only real issue with the Floor One S5 is its battery life. With up to 35 minutes of cordless use, it manages most, but not all, of my 150 sq. ft. townhouse, and that excludes the carpeted stairs where I can’t use it. On the last of the four floors, we had to put it back on the charging dock. For comparison, a full charge takes about four to five hours, though of course we didn’t have to wait that long to have enough juice for the whole house. Plus, the short battery life is also more reasonable considering it does both vacuuming and mopping, so it will save you time in the long run with its efficiency.

Overall, my experience with the Floor One S5 has been very enjoyable. Being able to vacuum and mop at the same time is extremely convenient, and all the “smart” features that allow you to switch between these functions are very welcome. While I wish the battery life was just a little bit longer, this is a fair trade-off for a device that makes something I don’t normally enjoy doing – cleaning – so much smoother and more efficient.

You can order the Tineco Floor One S5 for $649 on Tineco’s website, and a special discount of $250 is also available until Monday, August 19th.
