WNBA Commissioner’s Cup title game between Liberty and Lynx moved to UBS Arena due to NBA Draft

NEW YORK — The Commissioner’s Cup championship game between the Minnesota Lynx and Liberty on June 25 has been moved from Barclays Center to UBS Arena on Long Island, the league announced Monday.

Since the NBA Draft is scheduled to take place at the Barclays Center on June 26, the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final cannot take place there the day before. The NBA’s preparations for the draft at the Barclays Center lead to a conflict with the showdown between Liberty and Lynx.

“By scheduling the NBA Draft at Barclays Center on June 26, the NBA has created an unavoidable conflict over the use of the facility,” said NBA spokesman Mike Bass. “We are working closely with the New York Liberty to facilitate this one-day move to UBS Arena and provide the best possible experience for visitors and participants of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to season ticket holders and loyal Liberty fans.”

When the schedule was released, the Liberty contacted the WNBA about the potential arena conflict, a source familiar with the situation told the New York Daily News. And when the Liberty secured home-court advantage for the tournament final earlier this month, the team offered to play the July 2 regular-season game against the Lynx as the final, a source said.

Making the matchup a Commissioner’s Cup final would have allowed both teams to avoid another game on their already busy schedule, but the Lynx declined the offer, a source said.

The source added that the league had given the Liberty the opportunity to play the title game in Minnesota. The Liberty declined that offer. The Liberty initially secured home-court advantage for the title game at Barclays Center after having the better winning percentage between the two teams during the regular season.

“We are excited for the opportunity to defend our Commissioner’s Cup title in New York and appreciate our fans’ unwavering support for our team,” Liberty CEO Keia Clarke said in a statement. “While we would have loved to be able to present this game to our fans at our home arena, we are grateful to UBS Arena for accommodating us and providing us with a first-class venue in New York.”

Opened in 2021, UBS Arena is the home of the Islanders and has hosted college basketball in the past, including matches between St. John’s and Iona.

Both the Barclays Center and the UBS Arena have a capacity of around 17,000 spectators.

The Commissioner’s Cup is in its fourth year. The Liberty won the Cup title last year after Jonquel Jones led her team to a victory over the Las Vegas Aces at Michelob Ultra Arena.

Next week’s winner at the UBS Arena will receive a prize pool of $500,000. Sponsor Coinbase has pledged an additional $120,000 in cryptocurrency, with each player participating in the title game guaranteed $5,000.

The team also raises donations for local organizations of their choice.
