Singer and actress Andra Day tells PEOPLE she’s “at peace” with being single — but she hopes to settle down and start a family one day.

“I’m not seeing anyone at the moment,” she says. “I came out of something I wasn’t supposed to be in, so I’m creating this space for myself. That feels good to me.”

“Someday I want to be in love. I want to be married and have a family and all that, but I also want a little girl. I think she’s just going to be so sweet,” says Day, 39.

The star of the new Netflix film The Redemption isn’t afraid to start a family on her own, however. Day – who previously spoke to PEOPLE about the possibility of freezing her eggs – is still considering trying it on her own.

“This year in particular, I’ve just been paying attention to my health. I was like, ‘Okay, am I even in the right shape or condition to do this?’ Obviously I am. Which is good. So yeah, I still think about it,” she says.

“I think I was just so career-focused and also self-protective for so long,” the Grammy winner and “Rise Up” singer continues. “We were taught to just focus on work and all of those things. There wasn’t as much emphasis on holistic success and health – yes, in work and finances, but that’s not holistic and healthy. Those are things,” Day adds.

“And I try not to let other people’s mentality affect me. I’m a Christian, so, Lord, you know, some people in this community, especially in America, can be incredibly judgmental. You just say, ‘Come on, guys.’ Today, the family structure can look different. Like, ‘Hello?!'” she says.

Day says she spoke to a woman who didn’t want to become a mother on her own because she was afraid of what other people would think. “She said, ‘That’s my biggest regret.’ She said, ‘Don’t let that stop you,'” Day recalls. “I’m still thinking about it. But it’s a big decision.”

Although she is not a mother, some strangers think she is.

For The Redemptionshe had the names of her three on-screen children temporarily tattooed on her left forearm. The supposedly fast-fading ink used on her skin hasn’t completely faded yet. “They told me they were like, ‘This will be gone in nine, 13 months at the most.’ But that was in April or May 2022,” Day says.

“People literally ask me now, ‘Oh, you have three kids?’ I say, ‘No, girl. Those kids don’t even exist!’ Now I’m a fake mother of fake kids,” jokes Day.

The Redemption is in theaters now and will stream on Netflix on Friday, August 30th.
