Leading representatives of the steel and iron industry today (17 August) called for the elimination of customs complications in the import of raw materials and capital goods.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee on Iron, Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel and Rolling Industries of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI), they urged the caretaker government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus to take necessary steps in this regard.

FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam, who attended virtually as guest of honour, stressed the importance of the iron and steel industry in the development of the country’s economy.

He called on business people to join forces and overcome the current crisis. Not only the steel industry, but all sectors see the customs process for imports as a major challenge.

“We have been hearing for a long time that the assessed value of imported goods at the port is much higher than the invoice value. We need to work on these places,” he said.

He began his speech with a prayer for those who lost their lives while building a discrimination-free state.

Speaking at the event, FBCCI Senior Vice-President Md Amin Helaly said the interim government’s chief adviser was a man of international repute and his brand value could be used to improve Bangladesh’s image abroad.

During the open discussion, business leaders also discussed the need to keep bank interest rates stable, reduce sales and value added taxes, and eliminate complications related to the HS Code.

They also called for urgent measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of quality gas to all types of industries.

The meeting was chaired by Chairman of the Standing Committee and Managing Director of Shahriar Steel Mills Limited, Masudul Alam.
