NFL team asked coach Davis Webb to play quarterback again last season

During an interview with Kay Adams on the “Up and Adams Show” earlier this week, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton shared a fascinating anecdote about quarterback coach Davis Webb.

“Davis Webb does a great job,” Payton told Adams. “He’s just — it’s unusual that you get a quarterback coach that literally just stopped playing. And then even last season he gets an email from a team that he might still be playing on. And he coaches that room. So you have kind of a caddy there and a really smart, up-and-coming coach working with those guys.”

Payton convinced Webb to give up his role as a backup quarterback in the NFL last year and join his coaching staff. Apparently, a team wanted Webb to return as a player last season. Payton did not name the specific team.

Before joining the Broncos as a coach, Davis played for the New York Giants (twice), the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills.

This is certainly not the first time an NFL team has asked a coach to switch to quarterback. During the 2020 season, the Broncos wanted coaches Rob Calabrese and Justin Rascati to start at quarterback after all of Denver’s quarterbacks were deemed ineligible to play due to COVID-19 protocol.

The Broncos couldn’t make it because NFL rules prohibit coaches from playing for their team, so instead Denver turned to practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton to take over the quarterback position (and that didn’t go well).

Webb could also not play for the Broncos in an emergency. He would have to step down from his coaching role, end his career and sign with the team as a player, but the league would likely not allow that on such short notice, just as it did not allow Calabrese and Rascati four years ago.

This is a moot point anyway, as Webb seems content to continue working as a coach and by all accounts he has settled into the new role well.

“I think he’s doing a great job,” quarterback Zach Wilson said earlier this month. “I really enjoy working with him. You wouldn’t believe he’s only been in the league as a coach for a couple of years. He’s doing a phenomenal job and he’s just a joy to be around.”

Webb, 29, appears to have a bright future as a coach in the NFL.
