FAST FIVE Serena Caples: Loving the fairground life

Meet Serena Caples, wife, mother, small business owner and Director of Development for the North Idaho Fair and Rodeo Foundation.

With nearly two decades of involvement with the Kootenai County Fairgrounds and 4-H programs, Serena brings a wealth of experience and commitment to our community. Born and raised in the Inland Northwest, Serena has lived in Kootenai County for nearly 20 years, so she has deep roots in our region. She comes from a ranching family and has a passion for western culture and agriculture. Serena is actively involved in the community, volunteering her time and skills to fundraising committees, various events, service programs, and her church. She enjoys using her expertise in event planning, design, and production, as well as her background in healthcare, to impact our community. Serena is excited to use her knowledge and experience to promote and share western culture and agriculture for many years to come.

1) What is the North Idaho Fair and Rodeo Foundation and what role do you play there?

The North Idaho Fair and Rodeo Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports our local community by contributing to the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. Some ways we do this include capital improvement contributions, scholarships for local youth who have participated in some way at the fairgrounds, and other educational opportunities. We believe it is a history worth preserving and a future worth supporting. As the Foundation’s Director of Development, I help advance our mission. Work in our community to impact many families and keep our history alive.

2) How and when did you start getting involved in our local festival?

I have been involved with our local fair since I was ten years old and started in 4-H.

3) What are your best fairground memories from your youth?

Some of my fondest memories of the fairgrounds include horse camp, a week-long adventure on horseback to learn better skills and socialize with other 4-H members, learning work ethic, helping with painting, and joyful memories of unwavering friendships. I have never missed a fair since. I love everything about our fair. The crisp mornings, smells, tastes, and feelings. It takes me back to such a simple time filled with cherished memories.

4) What would people be surprised to know about you?

It may surprise people that in addition to my work at the fairgrounds, I own a business with my husband called Integrity Landworks. I am also a mother and have a long history of working in the medical field. I hold numerous certifications in healthcare and management. I am definitely very involved in our community and hope to continue to enrich our region!

5) Why are our local fairgrounds and the North Idaho State Fair such an important part of our community?

When most people think of the fairgrounds, many only think of a 10-day fair in late August. It is so much more. In a world so divided, it is truly the community gathering place – it has something for everyone. It is a place that always brings people together. The joy of a wedding, the love of honoring a loved one at a memorial service, the excitement of the fair, the adrenaline rush of motocross, the unity at church gatherings or hard work at a home and garden show. This is a place that leaves no one untouched in any way.

We have many events throughout the year! The North Idaho State Fair runs through August 25th. Today, August 17th, the Fair Foundation is hosting a Brewfest to raise money. There will also be an exciting cornhole tournament at 3pm!

The Fair Foundation also hosts three days of bingo during the fair. All ages are welcome all three days! August 20th is Senior Citizens Day where we honor those 60 and older with a discount. On the 24th we partner with Make-A-Wish Idaho to support their mission in our community and on the 25th there is even more bingo! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our annual Cowboy Ball in April 2025!
