Women’s HoopDirt | Jamie Craighead Turner added to San Francisco women’s basketball team

He comes to Hilltop, the University of San Francisco women’s basketball program, with over a decade of experience as head coach and head coach Molly Goodenbour have announced the addition of Jamie (Craighead) Turner to the coaching staff.

“We are excited to add someone with Jamie’s experience and knowledge to our team,” said Goodenbour. “With over a decade of experience as a Division I head coach, she will be a tremendous asset to our organization. Jamie is passionate about basketball, incredibly organized and has the ability to connect with players, colleagues and the broader community.”

Turner comes to our team after spending nine seasons at the helm of the San Jose State women’s basketball team. During her tenure in the South Bay, Turner amassed 89 wins, the third-most of any head coach in program history.

Under Turner’s leadership, the Spartans reached the Mountain West Conference Tournament twice in 2015 and 2020, marking only the second and third times the team has made it that far in the conference tournament. In addition, the team’s 19 wins in the 2019-20 season were the program’s most since the team won 22 games in 1979-80.

In the 2019-20 season, their most successful team, the Spartans, made the most significant season turnaround in the country, going from six wins in the 2018-19 season to 19 wins the following season. Led by the youngest coaching staff in the Mountain West, the Spartans finished third in the league standings, the best finish ever for a team that finished last in the conference’s preseason poll.

Prior to San Jose State, Turner served as head coach at Sacramento State from 2009 to 2013. In four seasons with the Hornets, Turner was the winningest head coach in women’s basketball in 20 years, amassing 51 victories. She was the only coach to set a conference record since the team joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97.

In their final season at Sacramento State, the 2012-13 Hornets set several program records, including field goals, assists, blocked shots and fewest turnovers. The team also led the Big Sky in points, three-pointers and assists. Defensively, the team led the league in steals and blocks.

As a student-athlete at Oregon, Turner played on the women’s basketball team from 1998-02, helping the Ducks to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) title in 2002. When her playing career ended in 2002, Turner was the second-leading player in program history with 182 three-pointers made.

Turner is married to former student-athlete Melanie Turner, who competed at the Hilltop as a member of the women’s basketball program from 1998-02.
