Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal cancelled; Jamshedpur is one of the possible venues for the city’s remaining 2024 Durand Cup matches

The Durand Cup group match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant scheduled for Sunday at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata has been cancelled due to possible security concerns.

As protests rage in the city over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College, the city police reportedly described ensuring security as a major challenge.

According to sources, there are also talks that the remaining matches scheduled in the city could be shifted to Jamshedpur.

“The tournament committee is looking at several options. Jamshedpur is one option but there could be logistical issues. But nothing is confirmed at the moment and we are looking for the best solution,” a source said. Sports star under the condition of anonymity.

Mohun Bagan have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament, but a point from this abandoned derby would put East Bengal in a difficult position. The last eight will consist of six group winners and the two best runners-up.

The Red-and-Gold Brigade are currently second in the list of second-placed teams, but Goa, who play Shillong Lajong at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Saturday, could overtake the Kolkata side and make it to the knockout stages.

Fans of both opposing teams reportedly planned to express their solidarity with the victim during Sunday’s game.
