NA Cup Champion wins $140,000 in gold

North America Cup winner Nijinsky (Bettors enjoy) took a comfortable win in the only Ontario Sires Stakes Gold division for three-year-old colts and geldings at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday (August 16).

Fifth, the colt followed the cones through the quarter in :26.4 until James MacDonald pulled him into cover late in the half in :56.1. Longshot Legal Attack (Jody Jamieson) led the outside stream and towed Nijinsky until the latter colt took a triple wide swing late in the three-quarter in 1:23.1.

As the field straightened up towards the finish, Nijinsky exploded, shooting forward and opening a three-and-a-half length lead, sealing the win by 1 minute, 51 seconds.

Crush Kill Destroy (Doug McNair) came out of the pocket second, followed by Wikipedia (Travis Cullen) who came in last.

NIJINSKY REPEAT

Nijinsky has now won eight of nine races this season, winning the North America Cup, Somebeachsomewhere Stakes and the Ontario Sires Stakes. Tony Beaton trains the colt, who has earned $1,114,082 and won nine of 19 career races. The three-year-old is owned by West Wins Stable of Wellington, John Fielding of Scarborough and Mark Dumain of Pine Bush.

The win and the check from Wikipedia brought Beaton’s career earnings to over $10 million. The trainer, who ran his first full season in 2017, is coming off a career year in 2023, winning 80 of 467 races and earning $2.2 million as a trainer. He has amassed 356 career totals and $10,016,398 in 2,383 starts.

Silver label (Bettors enjoy) dominated her top competitors in the evening’s $36,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap. Doug McNair put the mare in the lead at the halfway point and the two-time O’Brien Award winner opened a three-and-a-half length lead down the homestretch to win in 1:50.2.

Prohibition Legal (MacDonald) finished second ahead of finalist Tells On A Roll (Cullen).

SILVER LABEL REPLAY

Silver Label has won three Grand Circuit races in the past two months, winning both attempts at the Mohawk Fillies and Mares Preferred level during that period. Nick Gallucci trains the Millar Farms homebred horse, who has won 24 times in 51 appearances in his lifetime. The five-year-old has earned $1,569,993.

Woodbine Mohawk Park concludes its racing week on Saturday, August 17, with a program that includes eliminations for the William Wellwood Memorial and Peaceful Way, a $36,000 Preferred and three Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots divisions. The first start is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT.
