Floodwaters flood Orem family home during “100-year event”

OREM, Utah – Days after a heavy rainstorm flooded the city of Orem, families whose basements were flooded were still struggling to clean up.

In the Redd family’s basement, fans of all shapes and sizes were running nonstop, doing what they can to dry out the main floor after Tuesday’s flooding.

“The worst part was the glass, hail and debris. I was just trying to filter them out and pump the water out,” said Whitney Redd.

The city is now talking about a “flood of the century”.

Redd remembers what it was like to first watch the weather report.

“It was just like, ‘Oh, this is fun. This is new.’ Then it just started pouring, pouring, pouring until it looked like a river was running down our driveway,” she said.

They had to leave immediately to get everything they could to higher ground, but the rain came too quickly.

“(My husband says) ‘It’s going down too fast. There’s no way we can get it all out. Get out of the room, get out of the room,'” she said.

Redd was filming the water seeping through her in-laws’ basement window when suddenly a huge wave broke through.

“Surreal, just surreal, so much water coming in,” Redd recalled. “We were at Niagara Falls recently and it was the same at home.”

She said the water was about 40 to 60 centimeters deep. They had also renovated the basement just two months ago because sewage had built up there.

“Everyone is safe, it’s just a house,” Redd said. “It really sucks, but it’s just a house.”

Redd’s sister has started a GoFundMe campaign to help the family finance the second round of renovations this year. Click here to donate.
