Harris is skewered for his promise to cut prices on day one: “What have you done for the last four years?”

Vice President Kamala Harris promised to prioritize a price-fixing plan on “day one,” but commentators questioned why she had not reduced inflation during her tenure in the executive branch.

“If I’m president, my first priority will be to bring down prices,” Harris said in a social media post Thursday evening. “I will take action against big corporations that engage in illegal price gouging and corporate landlords that unfairly raise rents for working families.”

But the vice president and presidential candidate faces a particular challenge in political discussions: Many commentators have pointed out that she has failed to push through such changes during the Biden-Harris administration, which she currently leads.

“What have you been doing for the last four years?” asked Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.

Liberal WAPO columnist says Harris’ price controls sound like ‘communism’

“Day 1 for you was 3.5 years ago. What are you talking about?” asked Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics.

“‘Day one.’ We’re supposed to vote for them because we’ve been supposed to act like it never happened for the last four years,” posted Substacker Jim Treacher.

Columnist Jon Gabriel wrote: “They spent three and a half years raising prices.”

Political scientist Josiah Lippincott noted, “You’re currently vice president. Why aren’t you working on these issues?”

“You are now vice president. It’s been almost four years since your first day. You are simultaneously running as the current vice president and against the administration of which you are vice president,” said strategist Yossi Gestetner, criticizing her plan. “Price controls reduce incentives to produce, which saves supply and leaves more people with less. Brilliant.”

Conservative commentator Paul Szypula argued that Harris was primarily responsible for the economic problems: “Kamala Harris has been vice president for four years and has allowed prices to rise by an average of 20 percent. Prices are high because inflation is high. Harris voted to keep it that way.”

“Lol, she made our headline,” said Joel Berry, editor-in-chief of The Babylon Bee, as he shared a screenshot of his parody magazine’s headline: “‘I’ll fix things if you vote me in office,’ says woman currently in office.”

BIDEN INSTRUCTS MEDIA TO “WRITE” THAT HIS INFLATION POLICY “WORKS”

Other commentators sharply criticized the policy itself.

Financial and cultural commentator Wall Street Silver argued that historical and contemporary examples showed nothing good about such policies.

“Price controls failed in the 1970s when Nixon tried them. Companies cut production because they couldn’t make a profit at the prices set by the government,” he wrote. “This creates shortages as companies respond to government controls. Kamala is a socialist and will turn us into Venezuela.”

“It’s led to economic ruin in every country where it’s been tried. Every single one. And at least half of Americans will still think it’s a great idea. I’m not saying we’re doomed, but we’re probably doomed,” said Red State’s Bonchie.

Red State columnist Buzz Patterson wrote, “It’s called communism, and it doesn’t work. How many times does the world have to prove that?”

“Kamala Harris wants to impose price controls like those in socialist countries in key areas like food and housing,” said conservative author Libby Emmons. “And then she wants to make it harder for big corporations to create new jobs by eliminating tax breaks and investment incentives in the United States.”

Another conservative writer, Virginia Kruta, similarly condemned the policy and Harris’s endorsement.

“Read: If you run a small grocery store or own a rental home/building, you’re screwed and she doesn’t care,” she warned. “If she imposes price controls on larger chain stores and landlords, they will be forced to charge less than the small ones, and the small ones will lose.”

Harris unveiled her economic plan on Friday during a speech in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“If elected president, I will make it my top priority to lower costs and increase economic security for all Americans. As president, I will address the high costs that matter most to most Americans, like the cost of food,” she said. “We all know that prices went up during the pandemic when supply chains were shut down and failed, but our supply chains have since improved and prices are still too high.”

She later added: “I know most businesses are creating jobs, contributing to our economy and playing by the rules, but some are not and that is just not right. If that is the case, we need to take action.”
