WKU Glasgow expands campus with new courses

GLASGOW, Kentucky (WBKO) – WKU Glasgow is offering 20 new courses on campus to complement the school’s 11 majors.

“This semester we have new courses in everything from personal finance to plant science to chemistry for medical students,” said Derek Strode, director of regional development. “Students who want to become agricultural or business professionals are studying criminology and law, education and nursing. All of these courses have been newly brought to the Glasgow campus.”

In fall 2023, Glasgow served over 745 students. With the Glasgow location’s growth strategy implemented, an increase in enrollment is expected.

“We’ll have to wait and see how things go this fall semester, but we’re very confident that we’ll have at least 50 additional students than last fall,” Strode said.

New courses and majors on campus are designed to prepare students for the needs of the county and surrounding areas.

“Some of the greatest needs, like social work and teaching, are in areas where there is a significant job shortage,” he said. “We are working to fill the positions here in Barren County and in our rural counties to the east.”

An Early College Program is also being implemented on campus, allowing the university to accept more students and add programs.

The program offers 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to begin their studies at WKU early and complete their first year of college when they graduate from high school.

Participating high schools include Allen County-Scottsville, Barren County, Caverna, Glasgow, Hart County, Metcalfe County and Monroe County.

Classes begin on Monday, August 19th.
