Dance Arts Center | Fill the space with your will

When you are sitting at the top of the stalls, it is difficult to get the show you deserve. From a distance, the grandest gestures on stage are muffled; the most melodic voices sound tinny. A good stage performer therefore exaggerates the body and shortens his words so that they sound bigger and clearer. A Great Stage artist becomes bigger than herself, bloated, filling the entire room with her will, both on and off the stage.

It is clear that Nicolette Norgaard and Sara Silva – aka Dance Arts Center – know what it takes to Great. The LA-based duo, both working actresses, describe themselves, not surprisingly, as “former drama geeks turned club geeks.” But perhaps the two are not so far removed from the former Part: Norgaard produced and starred in her own indie film, On the edge of theand Silva plays a leading role in the new Amazon Prime series spin-off of Ice cold angels. The two have been friends since drama school and have a firm place in the canon of “Broadway Sleaze” and prove this with their new single and music video: “actress”.

With a grimy production that sits well alongside this summer’s late-night club binge-core, backed by loud, catchy vocals, “actor” blows and outbursts, Norgaard and Silva express desire, hypocrisy and the feverish in-between, making it clear to everyone in their metaphorical audience – even those in the pesky, far-away rafters – that they’re here to be noticed, and you are here to see them.

You can see the Dance Arts Center at Echo Park Rising this Saturday at The Echo/Echoplex.
