Rochdale News | Sports News | Britannia Metals becomes shareholder in Rochdale Hornets

Release date: 16 August 2024

Rochdale Hornets have announced that local company Britannia Metals Ltd has purchased shares in the club, meaning the company now owns a 10% stake.

Britannia Metals is based in Rochdale and is part of the Smith Metals Group, which is wholly owned by the Wilson family.

The shares were acquired by means of a share issue, so the money paid in was invested in the club.

Commenting on the news, Hornets Chairman Andy Mazey said: “Carl Halstead and I have been speaking to Jason Wilson from Britannia Metals for some time and we are delighted to announce that they have now joined our ownership group at Rochdale Hornets.

“Britannia Metals is a Rochdale company and the Wilson family are local people, born and bred in Rochdale, with a real passion for the sport.

“It is becoming increasingly apparent that in order to survive and thrive in the modern rugby league business with the IMG rating system, clubs need the strongest financial footing and best ownership model.

“With Britannia Metals joining Carl Halstead, Paul Ormerod and myself as shareholders and trustees of the club, Rochdale Hornets are in a very fortunate and stable position for 2025 and beyond.

“This investment is testament to the direction our club has taken in recent years, with a particular focus on bigger-scale thinking, sustainability and engaging with our wider communities in the Rochdale district.”

Jason Wilson of Britannia Metals added: “Britannia Metals is delighted to announce our investment in Rochdale Hornets. This will see Britannia Metals become not only a sponsor and supporter of the club, but also a shareholder.”

“The Hornets invest heavily in grassroots sport. The Hornets Foundation, their wheelchair and disability teams, as well as the many other areas of rugby league and the diverse and inclusive programs they offer, have provided strong support to the local community, something Britannia is committed to.

“The recent opening of the ‘Hive’ community facility at Balderstone Park is exciting and we are particularly excited about it. Britannia is a proud supporter of sport in Rochdale and we are delighted to be able to support the Hornets’ vision.”
