Dragon Age: The Veilguard Romance Options
If there’s one thing I’ll be dreaming about before launch, it’s all the romance options in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The characters have always been one of the best parts of the Dragon Age series, thanks in no small part to the detailed personal quests and truly compelling romances. Romantic companions in the series have inspired no small amount of loyalty and fanaticism among the fanbase. If you don’t have a Fenris/Anders feud in your circle of friends, then I envy you.
So far, we know at least a little about all of Rook’s companions in The Veilguard from the trailers. For those of you who have done your homework and have only recently read Tevinter Nights, there are also short stories featuring several companion characters that can provide more information. But we will be getting more information during “Companion Week,” which BioWare has planned launches on August 26. Until then, this is everything we know about how romance works and who you can woo.
How does romance work in The Veilguard?
Romancing companions in The Veilguard will, as far as we know, work pretty similarly to Dragon Age: Inquisition. You’ll take on quests relevant to your companions’ backstories, and if you want more than just friendship, you’ll choose flirtatious lines of dialogue at the appropriate moment.
This time (like in Dragon Age 2) All seven of your companions are pansexual and open to a relationship with Rook, regardless of race or gender. Importantly, those you don’t want to be in a relationship with may end up dating each other – just as Dorian and the Iron Bull had an implied relationship in Inquisition, even though neither of them was dating the Inquisitor.
As is typical with Dragon Age, there will be sex scenes with various companions later in the game when things get more serious. How far the nudity goes in these scenes is something BioWare said. wants players to discover for themselves, apparently.
Bellara
Bellara Lutare
- Class: magician
- Fraction: Veil sweater
- Written by: Johannes Epler
- Agree: Jee-Young-Han
Bellara is an elf and member of the Veil Jumpers, who explore ancient elf ruins. BioWare has declared that the glove she wears was created to facilitate the handling of magic when working with artifacts and constructs found in these ruins. Based on all of this, I assume she is a mage, although we also saw her glove transform into a bow and arrow. While not much is known about Bellara’s personality yet, she seems curious and optimistic in the short lines she has spoken in trailers.
Davrin
Davrin
- Class: warrior
- Fraction: Grey Guardians
- Written by: Johannes Dombrow
- Agree: Ike Amadi
Davrin is an elf and Grey Warden with a gryphon companion named Assan, who everyone is understandably in love with. The plague-fighting Wardens were the focus of Dragon Age: Origins and have appeared in other parts of the series, so at least a lot of lore is known about his affiliation. His personality is not too obvious yet, but based on all Unlike most of the Guardians in the series, he is probably a very serious guy, a knight in shining armor.
Emmerich
Emmrich Volkarin
- Class: Magician (Necromancer)
- Fraction: Mourning clock
- Written by: Sylvia Feketekuty
- Agree: Nick Boraine
Emmrich is a human necromancer and member of the Mourning Watch, one of the guardians of the Great Necropolis in Nevarra. He also has a skeleton named Manfred, voiced by Matthew Mercer.
He appeared briefly in the Tevinter Nights short stories, although I must admit I read them a while ago and don’t remember his personality. One thing we know specifically about his romance is that he is “a gentleman necromancer.” BioWare told IGNthat is “more intimate and sensual.” Based on the behavior I’ve seen from many of you on social media, that description really fits.
Harding
Lace Harding
- Class: Villain
- Fraction: Formerly the Inquisition
- Written by: Sheryl Chee
- Agree: Ali Hillis
Lace Harding, formerly Scout Harding of the Inquisition, is a dwarf and rogue with a somewhat dry sense of humor but a positive attitude and plenty of empathy. She definitely has the most established background and personality before The Veilguard. Harding grew up in The Hinterlands, the first major explorable area of Dragon Age: Inquisition, and joined the movement as a scout.
She actually had no The much screen time in Inquisition, but she made a big impression on fans by always showing up to introduce the Inquisitor to new areas to explore with a friendly word. There were a few opportunities for the Inquisitor to flirt with Harding, but no real romance developed like with other companions.
Harding has been seen frequently in Veilguard so far in various trailers and the gameplay reveal, where it was revealed that she will meet Rook very early in the story and help introduce her to Minrathous and other companions.
Luke
Lucas Dellamorte
- Class: Villain
- Fraction: Antivan Crows
- Written by: Mary Kirby
- Agree: Zach Mendez
Lucanis is a human villain and member of the Antivan Crows, who also appear in the Tevinter Nights short stories. I assume he is a villain since he is a crow and several Daggers, but he has some kind of magical thing based on the giant purple wings you see in the Release Date Trailer.
Everything we’ve seen of him suggests he’ll be distant and mysterious, but maybe he’s not quite as closed off as he seems. “He’s the only dumpster fire of the crew,” Mary Kirby posted in June. “I wrote him specifically to be a bisexual disaster of a human being.” There you have it. Zevran lovers, please come and get your man.
Snow
Neve Gallus
- Class: Magician (Ice)
- Fraction: Shadow Dragons
- Written by: Brianne Battye
- Agree: Jessica Clark
Neve is a human mage, private investigator and member of the underground faction of the Shadow Dragons in Tevinter. So far we have seen quite a lot of dialogue with her in Gameplay reveal which suggests she’s smart, funny, and maybe a little flirty. She’s also the only one whose love scenes we’ve actually hinted at. “You and me, Rook. Maybe that’s what scares me,” she says a little shyly in the release date trailer.
Not for nothing, but I also bet that it could be the magician who betrays me this time. Being duped by a magical lover has become something of a TV tradition – please accept my condolences, Solasmancers.
Taash
Taash
- Class: warrior
- Fraction: Lords of Luck
- Written by: Trick Weekes
- Agree: Jin Maley
Tash is a Qunari warrior and a member of the Lords of Fortune, a guild of treasure hunters based in Rivain. That explains all the gold jewelry and the emerald horn. Tash is also referred to as the “Dragon Hunter,” which draws a lot of similarities to The Iron Bull, a romantic companion from Inquisition also written by Weekes. That’s not to say we can expect exactly the same kind of romance—Bull’s romance was pretty memorable—but I’d bet a well-known treasure-hunting warrior has a similar level of confidence.
