Full House’s Jodie Sweetin recreated Stephanie’s viral dance and the nostalgia is real
Thanks to streaming, classic sitcoms like Full house continues to be an important part of people’s lives. It’s arguably one of the best shows streaming on Max. Plus, in addition to the retro TV theme song that still hits, there are plenty of iconic and viral moments in the TGIF series. Now, thanks to the internet, Jodie Sweetin has been able to recreate one of those viral moments.
In the season five episode “Gotta Dance,” Stephanie decides to devote herself to dancing full-time before eventually realizing that it has taken over her life and she’s missing out on everything and everyone. However, she gives one last dance performance and after intentionally messing it up the first time, she and her fellow dancers are a smash hit dancing to “Motownphilly” by Boyz II Men.
Then, in a new Instagram video by artist Mitchell Gerrard Johnson, he and Sweetin donned matching outfits almost identical to those in Full house and recreated the legendary moment. Check it out:
Speaking of nostalgia, I feel like I’ve been transported back in time!
That “Mototownphilly” dance was already mesmerizing and the fact that Sweetin and the rest of the dancers were just kids made it even more impressive. From the beginning of the series, it was clear that Stephanie was a dancer, whether she was doing ballet, hip hop or something else. It was only a matter of time before she became fully focused on the arts on the show and it wasn’t that surprising that she wanted to take a step back due to her full commitment. Luckily, she still wanted to do the final number and it’s good that she did.
It’s been almost 33 years since this episode premiered, and it’s still a favorite among fans, myself included. Seeing Jodie Sweetin recreate it, outfit and all, is perhaps one of the best things ever. She also proved that she’s still got it even after all these years. In the comments, she shared that she had the “BEST time” recreating the moves, and now I need more of it.
“Motownphilly” is not the only Stephanie dance that has been imitated. Fans will remember that a great Full house Call back on Fuller house saw Jimmy Gibbler recreate the “Love Shack” dance from the fundraiser episode in season 3, and it was as perfect and surprising as ever. Again, the outfit made everything even better. Now all I have to do is recreate Stephanie’s impersonation of a swan from season 1 for her ballet performance, and I’ll be an even happier camper.
Jodie Sweetin continues to experience her Full house days with her rewatch podcast, How rude! Tanneritos, with Andrea Barber. Not only do they reminisce about their days on the show while watching the episodes, but they also invite special guests and it’s full of nostalgia, just like this video.
No matter how long ago it was, Full house remains a cult classic and beloved by many, and I am eternally grateful. Fans with a Max subscription can now relive their fondest memories.
