Sumit Nagal leads Indian tennis team in match against Sweden

Sumit Nagal will be a five-member Indian tennis Team for the Davis Cup 2024 As the All India Tennis Association (AITA) announced on Friday, World Group I will play against Sweden next month.

India will face Sweden on September 14 and 15 on the indoor hard courts of the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm.

Former national champion Ashutosh Singh will be the new national coach of the Indian Davis Cup team after long-time coach Zeeshan Ali recently resigned from his post.

Sumit Nagal, ranked 74th in the world tennis rankings and India’s best singles player, returns to the Davis Cup team after missing the match against Pakistan in Islamabad in February.

Meanwhile, Indian doubles player No. 1 and world number 48 Yuki Bhambri has withdrawn from the match against Sweden.

In Yuki’s absence, N Sriram Balaji is the best Indian doubles player at number 69 in the world. Rohan Bopanna, fourth in the doubles world rankings, finished his Indian Tennis career after the end of his campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games last month.

Mukund Sasikumar, the third-best-ranked Indian singles player (world ranking 476), was not considered for selection.

Ramkumar Ramanathan has made it into the Indian Davis Cup team. He is ranked 324 in singles and 139 in doubles and could potentially play in both tournaments when he plays against Sweden.

In a statement, the AITA said the Indian Davis Cup team was selected “after careful consideration based on the rankings, availability, recent performances and current form of the players.”

Meanwhile, Niki Poonacha, who made his debut against Pakistan, and former national champion Siddharth Vishwakarma have also been included in India’s Davis Cup team.

Aryan Shah has been named as the reserve player. Both Siddharth and Aryan will make their Davis Cup debut for India, while Rohit Rajpal will serve as the team’s non-playing captain.
