The NY Giants strengthen their backfield again with the signing of a former Patriots and Raiders FB

This is a bit of a surprise. Not because it’s a big name signing, but let’s be honest, many of us have forgotten about the fullbacks. The same can’t be said for NY Giants General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll.

News just came in that the G-Men have made a move at the position, signing veteran fullback Jakob Johnson. Johnson began his career with the Patriots and then spent the last two seasons in Las Vegas with the Raiders. Now it’s time to see what he can do for the Giants, who will have a new look for their running attack in 2024 since Saquon Barkley left for Philly.

This came shortly after the Giants signed former Chargers running back Joshua Kelley to a new contract, which made sense since Tyrone Tracy Jr. will be out for a while with his sprained ankle. And Johnson? Yes, that’s a smart signing too.

Johnson has been strong from his FB spot and has provided good blocks to the lead runners. He did a good job in both New England and Vegas. New offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo also knows him well. Bricillo was OL coach at NE and the Raiders before joining Coach Dabes in East Rutherford – he knows Johnson can do the job.

While they don’t always get the most credit, fullbacks can’t be underestimated in today’s game. This is an interesting new piece in the offensive puzzle for the Giants, as things will actually look very different for the running game now that Saquon is out of town. Johnson has played in 67 games over the course of his career, 34 of which were starts. This is undoubtedly an interesting signing.
