A 10-month-old girl died in an accident in the west of the country in which a 46-year-old man also died.

The accident between a Vauxhall Astra and a Kia Rio occurred on Monday at Iron Railings Cross near Tavistock in Devon.

A 46-year-old man, a passenger in the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene, while seven people, including the baby, were taken to hospital.

On Thursday, Devon and Cornwall Police said the baby had died from serious injuries at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Sergeant Troy Bennett, who is investigating the accident, said: “This is a tragic incident and the thoughts of our officers are with the families and friends of all those involved.

“This will have shocked and saddened the community, particularly given the death of a young child. We are investigating the circumstances leading to the collision.

“Professionals support the affected families.”

Of the remaining six people hospitalized, three still have serious injuries, while three others were discharged after treatment.

The road was closed after the accident on Monday and reopened on Tuesday morning.

He was released on bail pending further investigations, police added.
