Man-eating wolves kill 8 people in Uttar Pradesh, 4 captured so far

Another killer wolf, part of the pack that had terrorized people in 25 to 30 villages in Uttar Pradesh, was caught by the forest department on Thursday.

In the last 45 days, man-eating wolves in the Bahraich region have reportedly killed around eight people, including six children and a woman. More than 25 people have been injured, leaving 50,000 people living in these areas sleepless nights.

On Thursday, the forestry department caught one of the killer wolves, bringing the total number of captured wolves to four. Two more are still on the run.

Akashdeep Badhawan, head of Operation Bhediya, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Barabanki, told PTI that a male wolf was caught in one of the cages near Sisayya Chudamani village in the morning.

The forestry department is using drone cameras and thermal imaging cameras to catch the wolves. The chief game warden has given permission to tranquilize the animals, according to an official statement.

According to the Forest Service, there is uncertainty about the total number of wolves in the area, officials said.

Chief Forest Officer (Wildlife) Sanjay Srivastava said on Wednesday that 16 teams were working to capture the wolves and 12 district officials were also stationed here.

Additional Chief Forest Officer Renu Singh will remain at the site until the remaining wolves are captured, he added.
