Amy Dowden’s return to Strictly Come Dancing is celebrated with an “energising” group dance by the show’s pros

The performance will be featured in the opening show of the BBC dance programme’s 22nd series, which celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Dowden, who lives in the West Midlands and runs dance studio Art in Motion in Dudley, will return to the show after being diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023 when she discovered a lump the day before her honeymoon, leaving her without a celebrity partner on this year’s season of Strictly.

The 34-year-old announced in February that she would return to the show this year after undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy and, according to tests, showing “no signs of disease.”

Speaking about the dance in her honour, Dowden said: “I am so excited about every detail of being back with my Strictly family.

“I’m so grateful for this opportunity, especially because it’s a very special year for this legendary show. It feels like it’s my first year again.”

“I’m really excited to see the whole team, the costumes, the dance routines, the celebrities and the jury. Everyone laughs at me because I’m always smiling.

“I would like to dedicate this dance to my pink sisters who have supported me over the past year and to all those currently suffering from cancer.”

The routine is choreographed by Jason Gilkison and is danced to a medley of “Training Season” by Dua Lipa, “Busy Earnin’” and “Keep Moving,” both by Jungle, and “Candle Flame” by Jungle and Eric the Architect, all performed by Dave Arch and his band.

Dowden’s family will watch as the dance is performed at Elstree Studios, as part of a new series starting on September 21.

Of the performance he choreographed, Gilkison said: “It was a great pleasure to choreograph this very special, powerful and empowering routine to celebrate Amy’s return.

“It is a real pleasure to work with her and all the professional dancers. They are the best in their field and we are happy to be able to share their skills with the nation, especially with this celebration dance.”

Dowden returns to the Strictly line-up this year alongside dancers including 2023 winner Vito Coppola, Dianne Buswell, Nikita Kuzmin, Johannes Radebe, Kai Widdrington, Nancy Xu and Carlos Gu.

Previously, there had been a stormy controversy surrounding the BBC dance show, which focused on the alleged treatment of the candidates.

The BBC launched an investigation after former contestant Amanda Abbington made allegations against Giovanni Pernice; the results have not yet been published.

Pernice denies the allegations and his fellow dancer Graziano Di Prima has also left the show.
