FIA makes last-minute changes to the Italian Grand Prix

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has introduced a notable change for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place this weekend.

The most important change is the extension of the main DRS (Drag Reduction System) zone on the Monza straight by a further 103 metres.

This change represents something of a departure from the FIA’s recent trend of shortening DRS zones at various Formula 1 circuits. These shortenings were made because of concerns that overtaking had become too easy and that the races were therefore less competitive.

However, Monza presents a unique challenge for the drivers; even with the help of DRS, overtaking was difficult.

While the detection point for DRS use remains unchanged at this year’s Grand Prix (20 metres after the Parabolica corner), the activation line where drivers can open their DRS has been moved. It now starts just 12 metres after the start/finish line, significantly closer than the previous position of 115 metres after the same line.

In addition, Monza is equipped with a second DRS zone, the layout of which has remained unchanged in the current season. In this zone, the detection point is 95 meters before turn 7 (second Lesmo corner) and the activation point marks 170 meters after turn 7.
