Chargers strengthen their defense with a clever transfer of Elijah Molden to add another titan

LA Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz promised to actively work on the fringes of the roster, and the new GM has done nothing less than that. After bringing in new faces throughout training camp, Hortiz continued the trend by trading late-draft capital for slot cornerback Elijah Molden, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

This is the Chargers’ second signing on Wednesday after trimming the roster to 53 players on Tuesday. Los Angeles also signed former Michigan running back Hassan Haskins, who will play a key role on Ryan Ficken’s special teams.

Molden, meanwhile, will likely take over as starting slot cornerback in place of Ja’Sir Taylor in Jesse Minter’s defense. Rookie cornerback Tarheeb Still, a slot corner, was not seen at the Chargers’ practice on Wednesday. It’s unclear if the two moves are related.

The Chargers have made a trend this season of signing former Titans players. It started with fellow cornerback Kristian Fulton, who the Bolts signed in March during free agency. The Chargers followed that by signing Bud Dupree, signing Teair Tart during practice and now trading for Molden.

Molden is a smaller cornerback among NFL players, but the 2021 third-round pick can certainly play. While he will primarily play in the slot, Minter has the flexibility to use him in nickel packages on defense to be playable depending on the matchup.

Signing Molden also essentially resulted in Woods being released from the team. Woods was officially released to make room for Haskins, but that was mostly a matter of timing. With Molden on the roster, there was no reason to keep Woods even though he had changed his position to cornerback.

The Chargers will have to trade another player to make room for Molden, and the most likely candidate is Jaret Patterson. With Haskins on the roster, the Chargers currently have five running backs on the lineup, and Patterson is RB5.

Regardless of the roster changes that follow, the fact remains that Hortiz remains true to his word to be active and try to optimize the roster wherever and whenever he can.

This is something Chargers fans are not used to, and after suffering under the previous regime, they should certainly appreciate it.
