Beats his roommate and leaves him to die in flames, arrested after one year

He is said to have beaten his 54-year-old roommate and set fire to the apartment, killing him. This hypothesis led the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office to arrest a 55-year-old Romanian a year after the events, believing him to be responsible for manslaughter and arson. The victim of this apparently involuntary tragedy is another Romanian citizen, whose lifeless body was found after he put out the fire in an apartment on Via Appia Nuova in Rome in July last year.

On that occasion, a soldier who was off duty shortly after 9 p.m. noticed smoke coming from an apartment and raised the alarm. Two men of Romanian origin left the burning house, while a third, also of Romanian origin, was found dead in the room where the fire had spread. Forensic findings showed that the man had been severely beaten before dying of smoke inhalation from the fire.

The attention of the investigators was focused on the two Romanians who had escaped the fire and during the investigation it emerged that the suspect, currently 55 years old, had previously argued with the victim over issues related to the rent payment. Confirmation was then provided by checking the clothes worn by the suspect, on which traces of the deceased were found, by examining telephone traffic and by a long series of viewings of images from various video surveillance cameras, which refuted the theory of the alleged murderer, who had stated several times that he was somewhere else.

After drawing up the framework of the indictment, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requested and obtained from the investigating judge the issuance of an arrest warrant against the 55-year-old, who ordered his provisional detention; the offences contested in the arrest warrant are murder and aggravated arson. The officers from the Appio police station, appointed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to carry out the measure, tracked down the man and, after drawing up the procedural documents, accompanied him to Regina Coeli at the disposal of the judicial authority.
