Meet Josie Perdue – Inside UNC Charlotte

Josie Perdue, an Honors College student majoring in Communication and minoring in Dance, is passionate about connecting with people and making a difference. Learn more about her nonprofit organization, Josie’s Blessings in a Box, and her experiences as a dancer.

What made you choose communications as your major and dance as your minor?

I majored in communications because I am a “people person.” I love meeting new people and networking. I am told that I am a good listener and people often open up to me and feel comfortable sharing their problems with me. I focus on public speaking, culture, and social change. I truly want to make a difference in the lives of others. Dancing is my passion and I have been dancing since I was 3 years old. I started dancing competitively when I was 5. Through dancing, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance.

Do you have any other passions and hobbies?

I have always had a passion for community service and helping those in need, especially the homeless and less fortunate. In 2021, I started my own 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Josie’s Blessing in a Box. A blessing box is a wooden container that contains non-perishable food and hygiene items for those in need. These boxes are accessible 24/7. I built nine boxes and placed them throughout the Triad area so that anyone can donate and those in need can take what they need. Blessing boxes serve as a safety net for individuals who need food but cannot visit a food bank during regular hours.

What role does dance play in your life?

I love dancing. It’s my passion and my escape. Performing, whether on a football field or on a stage, makes me feel great. When I’m stressed, I use dancing as an outlet. It’s good to move creatively. Dancing has helped me with my scoliosis because it forces me to maintain good posture and learn how to compensate for my curvature to have good dance technique. I feel blessed with this talent.

If you could create your own dream dance routine, what song would you choose and what would the theme be?

I’m a huge Whitney Houston fan, so I would choose one of her songs to create my dream dance routine. It would be an acrolyric piece with big moments where her music builds and she hits the high notes.

What style of dance do you like to perform the most and why do you like it?

I have trained in all styles of dance, but my favorites are acrobatics and contortion. I am double jointed and very flexible. I am best known for my agility and my ability to do “tricks” where I hyperextend my legs. From a young age, I have entertained people in unique ways by being able to dislocate my shoulders, hips and knees. Somersaults are one of my strengths and I love incorporating acrobatics into my dances.

What advice would you give to new students in Charlotte?

Take advantage of the writing center and attend your professors’ office hours. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re struggling. It can really make a difference. Also, attend some social events and try to meet new people and have new experiences.

If you had a day without responsibilities or obligations, how would you spend it?

I’m a country boy at heart and love nature! I like to ride quad bikes, go fishing and clay pigeon shooting. A perfect day for me would be at the beach, by the lake or in the mountains.
