The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Tuesday when the workers were on their way home after finishing work and had removed all their protective equipment, including their helmets.

According to eyewitnesses, a brick lying on the third-floor window fell down as the workers were walking on the parapet, leaving the victim, Sanbar Alam, unconscious. “Blood started oozing from his head and he was immediately rushed to the hospital,” an eyewitness said.

The complainant in this case, Qasim Jamaluddin, 36, hails from Bihar and came to Mumbai a few years ago. He works as a labourer and lives in Panvel along with his friend Akram, three others, Sanbar Alam, 22, his brother Tanveer Alam and his cousin Anjar Alam. They hail from the same village as their birthplace in Bihar.

When other workers looked up after the bricks fell, they saw that the bricks were piled up on the third floor window of the building and one had fallen down and landed on Alam’s head.

He was taken to Chembur Hospital where the doctor on duty examined Alam and started treatment. After an hour, the doctor informed that Alam had a brain haemorrhage and needed surgery. “Construction manager Injar Tafezul Alam, 23, had placed the bricks on the third-floor window. He could have kept them in another safe place for safety reasons but he carelessly placed the bricks on the window ledge, putting other people in danger,” a police official said.

The Tilak Nagar police were informed about the incident and a police team visited the site and conducted a panchnama. The site manager was booked under sections 125 (endangering human life or personal safety of others) and 125 (b) (if causing grievous bodily harm, imprisonment will be imposed) of the BNS.
