Woolworths has launched a new digital savings tool that can alert customers when items are on sale or on offer. With rising grocery prices putting pressure on many Australians, this feature could help shoppers get the best deal possible.

Woolworths has launched Watchlist, a new feature in the Woolworths app that allows users to mark items they want to watch with a ‘heart’ and receive notifications when they go on sale. The supermarket announced Yahoo Finance a first look at the feature, which also sends a single push notification every Wednesday to inform customers about special offers and deals on their watchlist.

Faye Ilhan of the Woolworths Group said Yahoo Finance The supermarket hoped the watchlist tool would help customers “find more value and get the most out of their weekly shop”.

Woolworths reported lower profit for 2024 as the company’s bottom line was hit by a $1.5 billion impairment charge at its New Zealand supermarket.

Sales rose nearly 6 percent, but after-tax profits fell 93 percent to $108 million.

Food prices at Woolworths fell by 0.6 percent in the June quarter and by 0.2 percent in the March quarter, the supermarket said. Prices for meat, fruit and vegetables fell the most.

Data from consumer group CHOICE found that shoppers were often confused by Coles, Woolworths and Aldi’s “special offers”, with phrases such as “lower, less”, “low price” and “prices slashed” making it difficult to tell if it was actually a discount.

“Consumers are increasingly confused about the pricing practices currently seen in supermarkets,” said Beatrice Sherwood, senior policy and campaigns adviser at CHOICE.

The watchlist tool is available in the Woolworths app.

Simply tap the heart button to save an item to your watchlist and you’ll receive updates when that item goes on sale.

The Woolworths app also allows you to browse weekly special offers and shop directly from the catalogue.

You will also receive a foretaste of the Wednesday specials every Monday from 5 p.m.
