ASCENSION, Louisiana (WAFB) – A Dutchtown Middle School student died from a medical emergency, authorities said, according to an email sent to parents Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Ascension Parish Schools confirmed that a student was taken to the hospital after a medical emergency at the school but later died.

The student’s name has not yet been disclosed.

The Ascension Parish school system released the following statement:

Dear Dutchtown Middle families,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of one of our students. This loss is deeply felt by our entire school community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family during this incredibly difficult time. As we come together to support one another, our priority is to offer care and compassion to all those affected – especially our students, teachers and staff.

To provide additional support, grief counselors will be on campus tomorrow. They are available to anyone who needs help processing this tragic loss.
