Break-in in Vancouver: Man jumps from 7th floor balcony

A bizarre break-in in broad daylight closed Davie Street in Vancouver for more than an hour on Tuesday afternoon and two men in their twenties had to be taken to hospital.

Witnesses said they saw a man jump from a seventh-floor balcony of an apartment building between Bidwell and Denman streets in the Downtown West End around 3:30 p.m. PT.

The man apparently fell to the third floor and was later taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Witnesses said a second man limped into the nearby Boathouse restaurant, bleeding, and claimed he had been the victim of a robbery.

“My hostess grabbed me and said someone was bleeding. I came out and thought it was an argument,” said restaurant manager Darrick Wan.

“He was on the phone and called the police. We helped him, treated him and suddenly the police showed up.”

Armed with machine guns and battering rams, Vancouver police searched the apartment and its roof.

Two other uninjured victims, a man and a woman, were found by police in the building, but police say the suspect had already fled.

According to police, both injured men were known to police and it is assumed that the incident was a targeted attack.

Monica Wilson, another nearby tenant, often leaves her balcony door unlocked. Now she says, “I think maybe I should be more careful.”
