Why Yuji Itadori has to die for the perfect ending.

Why Yuji Itadori has to die for the perfect ending.

This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 267.

Yuji Itadori is the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen and is certainly one of the most important characters in the series. Although he is not the most popular person in JJKYuji has been getting a lot of attention, and that’s to be expected since he’s driving the story forward. With Jujutsu Kaisen currently in its final story arc, Yuji is more important now than ever, especially when it comes to defeating the King of Curses, Sukuna.

The responsibility for this now falls to Yuji Itadori, and that essentially makes this the most important moment of his life. However, defeating Sukuna is no easy task, and it can easily result in someone getting killed, as was the theme in the final chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen. The series’ protagonist, Yuji, may well lose his life as well, and in some ways, his death may actually be necessary for the series to reach its perfect conclusion.

Yuji’s death was hinted at at the beginning of JJK

Yuji Itadori in Jujutsu Kaisen

  • Yuji’s grandfather spoke about his death
  • The cycle of curses continues if Yuji lives

At the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, the idea of Yuji Itadori’s death was already introduced into the story. Fans saw Yuji’s grandfather die at the beginning of the story, and when he died, there was no one around him. All he was left with were his feelings of regret, and while fans can’t delve deeper into these, what he mentions to Yuji suggests that he wasn’t able to help as many people as he wanted to, and that’s why he didn’t have enough people around him in his final moments. He asked Yuji to do the exact opposite and help as many people as possible, which would then ensure that when he did indeed die, he would be surrounded by the people he loved.

Make sure you help as many people as you can!

Of course, since this was mentioned right at the beginning of the series, fans probably didn’t think much of it. However, looking back at this revelation, this could actually be a major clue as to what plans the author has for Yuji Itadori at the end of the series. Yuji could potentially die a grievous death at the end of JJK, and since he would have helped so many people and potentially saved the entire world, he would then be surrounded by all the people who love him and celebrated as a hero. This would be the perfect death for Yuji in many ways. He would want nothing more than to help his friends and avenge those who fell, while also restoring the order he wanted.

Yuji’s death was also hinted at once when he fought a finger wielder. Basically, Yuji actually died this time and was only resurrected thanks to the bonding vow he made with Sukuna. This is where Yuji fell in front of his friends and for a considerable time, even fans believed he died. Again, this could have been a hint from the author that he is not afraid to kill even the main character and that could potentially happen again at the end of this story. If Yuji could sacrifice himself once, he could potentially do it again, especially in the face of even greater danger.

The cycle of curses continues with Yuji and Sukuna

Yuji must break the cycle of curses

If the author’s little hints at the beginning Jujutsu Kaisen are not enough to convince fans of Yuji’s possible death, one just has to look at Kenjaku’s quote about Yuji Itadori and Sukuna co-existing. According to Kenjaku, as long as Yuji and Sukuna co-exist, the cycle of curses will never truly end. In many ways, Yuji is immersed in Sukuna’s cursed energy.

Yuji has to kill Sukuna no matter what, but whether he will survive or not is also an important question for fans to ask. If Yuji survives, it remains to be seen if the cycle of curses will truly end.

Let’s end this vicious cycle of curses, Sukuna! – Yuji

Perhaps at this point, Yuji and Sukuna are connected to a level where only the joint death of these two characters would ensure that the cycle of the curse ends. In fact, JJK Chapter 267, Yuji actually addressed this in their final battle. When he faced Sukuna, Yuji told him that it was finally time to end the cycle of curses. Fans may not have looked into these words too closely at first, but coupled with what Kenjaku said way back, it certainly implies that either Sukuna will die here, or both of them. If Yuji dies with Sukuna, the series will surely take a unique path that the author suggested at the beginning, and that will surely be heartbreaking for many readers, but at the same time fulfilling in terms of a perfect conclusion that the author prepared for the end of the story from the beginning.

What happens if Yuji Itadori dies?

If Yuji dies, Gojo could possibly return to JJK

When Yuji Itadori, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisenactually dies, then the fans will experience a very interesting scenario at the end JJK. For one, fans will see the King of Curses fall. Second, Yuji will fall with him, which would mean that the cycle of curses will truly be over. The number of cursed spirits will likely decrease significantly, and society in general will be much better off than before. However, wizards in general will be changed forever since Yuji will be gone. The group of Nobara, Yuji, and Megumi will be disbanded, which would mean that Nobara and Megumi will then carry on Yuji’s legacy. Yuji will forever be remembered as a legendary wizard who defeated the King of Curses, especially since he is the only one to ever accomplish such a thing.

Curiously, there is more to the scenario. During Jump Festa 2019, the author clearly mentioned his plans to kill off one character and leave three of the four main characters alive. Since Megumi and Nobara are already alive, if Yuji dies, there is also a possibility that Gojo will return from his death. Regardless of which plan the author decides to go with, Gojo could potentially return if Yuji does indeed die, and that could be a silver lining for fans mourning Yuji’s death.

Of course, Jujutsu Kaisen ends in four chapters, meaning fans won’t have to wait too long for the conclusion of this incredible story and find out if Yuji really dies and Gojo returns, or Gojo stays dead and Yuji survives in the end. Only time can tell.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read officially and for free by fans on Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 268, is set for September 1, 2024.
