Ryan Reynolds calls on the Academy to add a stunt Oscar to recognize his ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ team

Ryan Reynolds thinks it’s time the Academy added an Oscar for Best Stunt Team – if only to recognize the large number of industry veterans he worked with on the biggest live-action film of the year, “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

“Stunts don’t have their own category at the Oscars and I hope that one day changes,” Reynolds began in a lengthy social media post on Wednesday. “So many films made it this year. Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Chaplin were stuntmen and filmmakers at the same time. They told stories with their whole bodies.”

At the time, he drew particular attention to the crew of the MCU’s first R-rated action film, saying they “accomplished more than expected” and joking that he would “spend the rest of my days doodling their names on my Heidi stationery and dotting all the ‘i’s with little hearts.”

“I’ve worked with Alex Kyshkovych since the very first ‘Deadpool,'” said Reynolds, who stars, co-wrote and produced the film. “He’s not just my double – he’s the fight coordinator. I would take a sledgehammer to Alex’s face for him. Or rather, I would ask Alex to take a sledgehammer to Alex’s face for him.”

He continued, “Second unit director and supervising stunt coordinator George Cottle is a HUGE GOOD guy. His genius was seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home and a lot of other gems. His craft is world class and he made the whole movie better. I’d have Alex stick a rusty fork in his eye for George.”

The actor then praised his co-star Hugh Jackman, who has played Wolverine in the “X-Men” franchise for 24 years and is known for performing many of his own stunts – a performance that Reynolds described as “mind-blowing.”

“It’s incredible how much Hugh Jackman does himself, but Daniel Stevens steps in for the really dangerous stuff. He’s been ‘Wolverin’ for a long time,” Reynolds wrote. “As we know, Wolverining is HARD. I’d ask Alex to eat the crab salad I left on the dashboard for Dan for three days. Also, a big thanks to Andy Lister for bringing some new and crazy Wolvie gear to fight Deadpool Corps.”

Reynolds concluded his call to arms via X-Post by asking his followers and fans of “Deadpool & Wolverine” to tell the Academy that they agree and it’s time for a surprise Oscar.

“If you want the Academy to recognize the great work of stunt teams across the industry, let them know!” he exclaimed.

The “Deadpool” star isn’t the only Ryan throwing his impressive star power behind the grassroots “Oscars for Stunts” initiative this year. Much of Ryan Gosling’s press tour for the stunt-heavy “The Fall Guy” revolved around his support of the project.

“This is obviously a love letter to the stunt community, they’re the hardest working people in show business,” Gosling said at the film’s premiere in April. “They risk more than anyone else. This film is just a huge campaign to get stunts an Oscar.”
