A water buffalo that escaped in an Iowa city has been captured, officials said Wednesday.

Police in Pleasant Hill, a suburb of Des Moines, a city of about 11,000 people, responded to a 911 call Saturday about an animal in the street. It turned out to be a water buffalo, and the owner told police the animal was aggressive.

This was the case when police and animal welfare organizations attempted to capture the water buffalo and return it to its owner’s property. These efforts “resulted in the animal displaying aggressiveness toward Pleasant Hill officers, which resulted in a shotgun blast being fired, injuring the animal,” police said in a Facebook post Monday.

The injured water buffalo escaped. Police used drones and off-road vehicles to find it and brought in water buffalo experts. The animal was eventually found in a sand pit around 7:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the city said in a press release on Wednesday. Officials decided it was not safe to capture the water buffalo at that time “as it was getting dark and storms were approaching.”

On Wednesday morning, the water buffalo was lured out of the water and shot with a tranquilizer dart. After wandering around for another half hour, the water buffalo was shot with another tranquilizer dart, which rendered the animal “immobile,” the city said.

The water buffalo was then loaded into a trailer where it was given “counter medications, antibiotics and vitamins” before being taken to Iowa State University Veterinary Hospital for monitoring and any further medical care it may need.

The city said the owner turned the water buffalo over to police and an investigation into its escape is underway. Depending on the results of the investigation, charges could be filed, the city said. The city did not provide any information on the fate of the water buffalo once it is turned over to police.

Madison Pottebaum told CBS affiliate KCCI-TV that a police officer came into her backyard on Saturday and asked her if she had seen the water buffalo. Pottebaum told the station she thought the officer was joking until she saw the animal herself 30 minutes later.

“I look up and the water buffalo is just staring at me,” Pottebaum told KCCI.

She told the station that her dogs started barking and the water buffalo eventually ran away.

Water buffalo can weigh up to 2,600 pounds (1,200 kilograms), according to the National Geographic website, although the Iowa animal looks smaller in photos. The often domesticated water buffalo is the largest member of the cattle tribe, which includes yaks, bison, African buffalo, several species of wild cattle and others, the website says.

Earlier this month, several water buffalo escaped from their enclosure in Tennessee and wandered the streets before being driven back home, WKRN-TV reported.
