Man may die after shootout with another driver in east Houston

HOUSTON – Investigators in east Houston are piecing together the cause of a potentially fatal shooting between two men Thursday night that erupted in the wake of road rage.

IN NUMBERS: Texas: Drivers on high alert due to rising number of road rage shootings

The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. Lt. Willkens of the Houston Police Department said one of the shooters was taken to the hospital for surgery, but doctors did not believe he would make it.

Police are again trying to piece together how it all happened, but according to Lt. Willkens, a family in one of the cars involved is cooperating with officers. From the preliminary details shared by Lt. Willkens, it appears the crash may have started somewhere between Normandy and Uvalde on the I-10 Freeway eastbound.

The incident involved two people in a truck and a family of three in a black sedan. There was a man and a woman in the truck, both of whom were taken to the hospital, but Lt. Willkens said the man most likely won’t make it. The woman, who told police she and the man had been dating for a short time, will survive. She was “covered in blood” and distressed, Lt. Willkens said.

A 26-year-old man was driving the black sedan, and his mother was in the back seat. Lt. Willkens said she is actually a probation officer in Harris County and her husband was in the front seat. The family was on their way to get tacos, he explained, when the shooting occurred.

Officers arrived to find both vehicles riddled with bullets. In the back seat of the sedan was a woman (a Harris County probation officer), her husband and elderly father, and their son, who was in the driver’s seat. They told police they were going to get tacos when a truck pulled up behind them, ran them over, and the truck driver began shooting at them. The 26-year-old driver, according to Lt. Willkens, began shooting back at the truck, and one of those bullets struck the driver, who sent him to the hospital.

Both parties called police and are again cooperating with investigators. Homicide detectives as well as the District Attorney’s Office were called to the scene to investigate the case, but Lt. Wilkens also urged the public with any information to call police or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
