BMW recalls 720,000 vehicles due to fire problem in water pump

More than 720,000 BMW vehicles are being recalled because of a water pump problem that has the potential to cause a fire. According to the Associated Press, the recall affects certain vehicles in the X1, X3 and X5 series, as well as other models, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not disclose which models or years are involved.

The recall affects water pumps with inadequate sealing that can allow fluid to enter the electrical connector, AP reports. If this happens, a short circuit and possibly a fire can occur.

Affected owners can take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealer, where the repair will be performed free of charge. They will check the water pumps and connectors and replace them if necessary. They will also install a guard to drain any fluid that might drip onto the pump. Owners will be notified of the recall starting in October.
