Ten foreigners die after bus rolls over in South Africa

The bus was en route from neighbouring Zimbabwe to Johannesburg when the accident occurred on the N1 highway near Makhado, the Limpopo provincial department of transport and public safety said.

“All of the dead, five men and five women, are reportedly foreign nationals,” the agency said in a statement.

“Reports indicate that the bus was travelling at high speed through a roundabout, the last roundabout from Makhado towards Polokwane, lost control and overturned, killing and injuring its passengers.

“The bus driver is apparently new to his job and unfamiliar with the area,” it was said.

According to a separate statement by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), three people were seriously injured and 20 others slightly injured in another accident.

“Initial reports indicate the bus was travelling southbound when the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a roundabout, causing the vehicle to overturn,” the RTMC said.

“The exact cause is still being investigated. We ask all road users to be particularly careful at roundabouts.”

Two serious traffic accidents occurred in Limpopo province at the beginning of the year.

In May, 13 people died in a head-on collision between a heavy vehicle and a minibus taxi.

In March, 45 people were killed in another bus accident on the way from Botswana to South Africa.
