At approximately 12:40 p.m., the Pearland Fire Department told Eyewitness News that firefighters were called to a hazardous materials accident at the Barry Rose Water Reclamation Facility.

The department stated that it was an unknown oil spill but that there was no danger to the public.

ABC13 reporter Don Armstrong was in the SkyEye and above the accident site, where construction work could also be seen.

When Armstrong arrived at the facility, rescue workers in full protective gear and breathing masks could be seen near two large tanks.

“I don’t know much about wastewater plants, but I know they use chemicals and aeration to neutralize the product they pump,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong noted that the two large tanks are surrounded by a high brick wall and that workers have laid out cat litter and built another barrier around it to absorb some kind of liquid.

It is unclear what caused the hazardous substances to leak and what chemical they contain.
