The US architectural firm Populous has presented its design for a 47,000-seat stadium on an 800,000 square meter site in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

The Aramco Stadium, named after the state-owned oil company, will host matches at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and is expected to meet FIFA’s stadium criteria. It is expected to host matches up to the quarter-finals of the 2034 World Cup.

The development will also include other sports facilities, shops, entertainment areas, e-gaming centers and public spaces.

The design of the Populous Stadium is inspired by its surroundings on the Arabian Gulf coast and features a roof with spiral-shaped, translucent slats that curve over one another.

The flowing roof allows natural light into the interior and its shape is mimicked by spiral ramps and walkways that lead fans to their seats.

For special events, the spectator capacity can be increased to 55,000.

The stadium will have a cooling system for players and spectators.

Shireen Hamdan, General Manager of Populous Saudi Arabia, said: “The building’s open design invites the community to come together, celebrate and create lasting memories, making it a symbol of Al Khobar’s rich heritage and dynamic future. The design will achieve iconic status in the football world and become synonymous with Saudi Arabia’s vision.”

The Aramco Stadium is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Populous has also designed the 45,000-capacity Mohammed Bin Salman Stadium, which will also host matches for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. It will be located in the 50-hectare Qiddiya City district on the outskirts of Riyadh.
