Cobie Smulders “didn’t know” about the Maria Hill twist in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” – News about comic and superhero films

Cobie Smulders recently revealed that she was aware of the unexpected plot twist of her character Maria Hill towards the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Tom Holland’s second solo outing as the MCU web-slinger was the first film in the post-Avengers: Endgame era. The film also introduced the concept of the multiverse and helped Marvel end Phase Three and start Phase Four. The Jon Watts-directed film therefore featured several narrative aspects that surprised the audience at the end. By the looks of things, one such plot point was also kept hidden from the actors.

Cobie Smulders didn’t know Maria Hill was a Skrull in Spider-Man: Far From Home

According to Cobie Smulders, she only found out that Maria Hill is a Skrull after filming for Spider-Man: Far From Home was completed.

In the 2019 film, Spider-Man faces off against the villainous Elementals, a group of alien beings hell-bent on destroying worlds. Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury then recruit the webcrawler to team up with Quentin Beck, a superhero from another reality. However, it was later revealed that Beck was actually the nefarious mastermind behind everything. Later, in a post-credits scene, it is revealed that Smulders’ character was a Skrull during the course of the film.

Addressing her fans during Terrificon 2024, the Secret Invasion actress explained that she was initially unaware of the twist. “I wasn’t really myself. I didn’t know until the end when we finished filming,” Smulders recalled. “(Marvel Studios) told me. They said something like, ‘Just so you know, we were going to do this,'” she added.

Cobie Smulders also explained why Marvel wanted to keep Maria Hill’s true nature a secret. “They wanted me to play her (normal),” she said. “Even if I had known all along, I think we would still be playing the reality of everyday life,” Smulders further explained. (via ComicBook.com)

In addition to Hill, Nick Fury was also revealed to be a Skrull in the film’s post-credits scene. These developments led directly to the events of the series Secret Invasion, which premiered on Disney Plus on June 21, 2023.
