ALLEN PARK — Ben Johnson said he wanted size in his third receiver. But we can’t always get what we want, and the Detroit Lions coordinator won’t get it either, according to the Detroit Free Press, after Daurice Fountain was informed of his firing.

With Donovan Peoples-Jones and Kaden Davis both notified of their departures on Monday, the Lions officially have only one wide receiver over 6 feet tall. And even that guy – Jameson Williams – is more about speed than size.

All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown is a monster at the beginning of this rotation and Jamo is a big threat when he’s between the white lines. But what happens beyond that remains a huge question mark early in the season.

Detroit had an open race for the jobs behind those guys and really wanted a player with better size to complement what it already had in St. Brown and Williams. Kalif Raymond – another slot/gadget guy – was obviously the third-best player in camp, but also fills the gadget/slot role on offense. He’s also an All-Pro return man, and the Lions would like to avoid using him in an every-down role on offense.

Unfortunately, we can’t always get what we want. No one else stepped forward, so the Lions have declared Raymond their No. 3 receiver for now and eliminated the other big candidates for that position. At this point, you have to wonder if Isaiah Williams – another slot/gadget player – made the team after leading the Lions in receiving in the preseason and also hitting big kickoff and punt returns.

You also have to wonder if the Lions will try to get the size they desperately need on the waiver list, because with only one guy over 6’1″ – and that guy is Jamo – the Lions are truly undermanned at that position right now.
