Holocaust survivor dies after eating Boar’s Head deli meat – family says linked to listeria outbreak

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Gray News) – A Virginia family shared that they recently had to say goodbye to a loved one who passed away after eating Boar’s Head sausage.

Last month, Boar’s Head recalled 3.6 million kilograms of sausage products after a sample of liver sausage collected by health officials in Maryland tested positive for listeria.

The recall includes more than 70 products, including liver sausage, ham, beef salami and bologna, manufactured at the company’s Virginia plant.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported earlier this month that a third person had died in connection with an outbreak of listeria food poisoning that could be traced to Boar’s Head meat products.

On Tuesday, WVEC reported after speaking with his family that the person was 88-year-old Gunter Garshon Morgenstein.

“We’re all still in shock at everything he’s seen and been through in his life and now he comes to this, well, lunch,” his son Garshon Morgenstein told WVEC.

Garshon Morgenstein said that his father grew up in Germany and survived the Holocaust.

He also said that thanks to his European roots, his father enjoyed eating meat for lunch, including liverwurst.

“He always ate meat for lunch, always Boar’s Head,” Garshon Morgenstein said. “I don’t eat liverwurst, but that was something he ate and things like that, because he was European.”

According to the family, Gunter Garshon Morgenstein became ill on July 8 and died ten days later.

The man’s son said he checked his father’s purchases and found Boar’s Head sausage.

The Morgenstein family said they are actively pursuing legal action against Boar’s Head and warning others not to purchase the company’s deli meat.

The CDC reported on August 8 that the recall warning for Boar’s Head products remained active, as 43 illnesses and three deaths were reported associated with the meat sold to stores nationwide.
