Girl Scout from Oak Ridge receives silver award for her help with the holiday office

Girl Scout Norah Price of Oak Ridge won the Silver Award, the highest honor possible at the cadet level.

To receive the Silver Award, middle school girls must identify an issue affecting their community and implement a project that will result in lasting change.

Norah’s project was integrated into the work of the local Holiday Bureau. Since 1945, the Holiday Bureau, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, has provided toys, games, books and food to low-income families in Anderson County. Although the Holiday Bureau’s distribution is focused on the Christmas season, volunteers work and accept donations year-round.

Norah learned about the Holiday Bureau’s mission when, as a young Girl Scout, she joined other Oak Ridge Scout groups to refurbish donated dolls as part of the Dolls for Daisy project. Each year, Girl Scouts of all ages clean, do hair, dress and package hundreds of Barbie dolls and other dolls distributed by the Holiday Bureau.

Norah expanded her project by presenting information about the Holiday Bureau’s needs to schools and other Girl Scout groups. She created a display at the Oak Ridge Public Library to raise awareness of the Holiday Bureau and show citizens what kind of donations were needed and where people could donate or volunteer. Norah conducted a door-to-door toy drive in her neighborhood and collected donations offered on social media. She completed her project by painting the Holiday Bureau sign with the location.

Norah is a member of Girl Scout Troop 21158 and participates in activities of the Sisterhood of the Tan Vests.

Monetary donations to the Holiday Bureau can be made anytime to: PO Box 7120, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-7120. Items can be dropped off at the nonprofit at 728B Emory Valley Road. For more information, visit www.holidaybureau.org.
