MADISON, W.Va. – Thirteen-year-old Cohen Craddock, a defensive player at Madison Middle School in West Virginia, died over the weekend from a head injury sustained during practice.

This tragedy is the second football-related death from a head injury in a week. Cohen was injured in a tackle on Friday and although he initially got up, he soon lost consciousness.

Despite all rescue efforts, Cohen died on Saturday from a brain hemorrhage and swelling.

How did the injury occur?

During a routine football practice at Madison Middle School, Cohen Craddock suffered a serious head injury during a tackle. After the collision, Cohen briefly regained his feet but quickly lost consciousness.

His father, Ryan Craddock, reported that Cohen’s oxygen levels were critically low en route to the hospital. Despite medical intervention, Cohen’s injuries proved fatal, leaving a devastating scar on his family and community.

How does the community react?

The death of Cohen Craddock has profoundly affected the Madison Middle School community. Boone County Schools Superintendent Matthew Riggs announced that counseling and other support services will be offered to help students, faculty and staff cope with the loss.

Shann Elkins, principal of Madison Middle School, remembered Cohen as a “wonderful, polite and smart young man” who was well-respected by the school community.
