The ultimate fast family car? The BMW M5 Touring celebrates a comeback

Attention fans of fast station wagons: For the first time since 2010, the BMW M5 Touring is back.

With a massive 727 horsepower and the ability to carry up to 1,630 liters of luggage, BMW hopes its most extreme station wagon will easily fulfill the “every car you need” claim.

BMW has previously worked on touring versions of the M5. Between 1992 and 1995, a station wagon version of the E34 generation model was sold. And in 2007, a Formula 1-inspired E60 M5 Touring with a V10 engine was launched.

Only 1,025 examples of the previous M5 Touring were sold, which may explain BMW’s delay in building another model. However, the all-new M5 wagon will be sold in North America for the first time, which is expected to boost demand.

Heavyweight technique

The M5 Touring 2025, developed in parallel with the sedan, has a hybrid-assisted 4.4-liter V8 with twin turbochargers. The maximum output is 727 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque.

BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system is combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The entire package weighs 2,435 kg.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 3.6 seconds in the M5 Touring – 0.1 seconds slower than in the sedan. The top speed remains limited to 250 km/h, or 304 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.

As with the sedan, a trailer hitch is also available for the M5 Touring, which can be used to tow braked trailers weighing up to 2,000 kg.

Speed and practicality

Any high-performance station wagon is all about combining speed and functionality, and the 2024 M5 is unlikely to disappoint in this regard.

Compared to the 436 liters in the M5 sedan, the Touring version offers a trunk volume of 500 liters with the rear seats installed. However, if you fold them down in a 40:20:40 ratio, the trunk volume increases to 1,630 liters.

A through-loading option and an electrically operated tailgate with hands-free operation are installed as standard.

Other special features include – as with the BMW M5 sedan – M multifunction sports seats with high backrests, a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound audio system and satellite navigation with augmented reality.

After its debut at the Monterey Car Week in California, BMW is now accepting orders for the M5 Touring.

Production at the BMW Dingolfing plant will begin in November this year, with the first deliveries to British customers expected in early 2025.

Prices for the BMW M5 Touring start at £113,405 on the road in the UK: a £2,000 premium over the four-door M5 sedan.

Buyers of the M5 Touring can order a panoramic glass sunroof as well as numerous M Performance parts for additional personalization.
