Wayne Rooney: Plymouth boss draws positives from Carabao Cup defeat

Plymouth Argyle boss Wayne Rooney says there are positives to be taken from his team’s performance. 0-2 defeat in the Carabao Cup against Watford.

The Pilgrims remained second best for a long time and had their debut goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw to thank for not having to accept a major loss.

Argyle are yet to win against a Championship side this season and have drawn their last two league games after losing at Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day.

“There were some positives, we moved the ball well at times and played some good stuff at times,” Rooney told BBC Radio Devon.

“But I think we could have been more aggressive both with and without possession.

“I felt like we missed really good opportunities to get the ball into the box and try to cause problems and get more shots on goal.”

Rooney made nine changes to the nine-man side that drew 1-1 at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

He gave striker Michael Obafemi and goalkeeper Grimshaw their debuts, with the latter letting the ball slip through his legs for Watford’s opening goal.

But the new signing from Blackpool made up for it with four or five excellent saves before the Hornets made the game unbeatable for Argyle in the second half.

“Unfortunately for goalkeepers, a mistake usually ends in a goal,” Rooney said.

“But I thought his reaction afterwards was fantastic, he made some great saves.

“He was calm with the ball at his feet, so I was happy with his overall performance.

“Of course goalkeepers sometimes make mistakes, but overall I think he played a good game.”
