Five years ago
Much of the fourth episode of “Bad Monkey” takes place five years in the past to explain how Nick Stripling (Rob Delaney) is alive when people thought he was dead.
At the time, Eve Stripling (Meredith Hagner) was an aspiring actress and Nick was a single father to Caitlin (Charlotte Lawrence). When Nick takes Caitlin to a magazine launch party because she was modeling there, he meets Eve in the bar and they fall in love.
A year later, they get married, even though Caitlin doesn’t like Eve. Israel O’Peele (Zach Braff) is the best man. Nick tells Eve about his and Izzy’s medical fraud to get her to help them. In case it isn’t clear by now, Nick and Christopher are the same person.
At the same time, Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) is still a police officer in Miami, but uncovers a scam by his colleague Mendez, who runs the hotline. He wants to give his friends and family money by providing information about crimes that have already been solved. Yancy reports this to his superiors, who demote Mendez, which leads to a feud between them. However, Yancy himself is transferred to the Florida Keys due to his behavioral problems.
Nick, Eve, Izzy and Izzy’s family are vacationing on Andros in the Bahamas and Eve wants them to open a fancy resort there. To do this, Nick decides to increase the flow of money from the scam, but this attracts the attention of the FBI. Nick believes he and Izzy must flee, but Eve doesn’t want to.
Clarify open questions
While eating ice cream with his partner Rogelio, Yancy meets Bonnie (Michelle Monaghan). They get to know each other over several dates and Yancy learns that her husband Cliff beats her, whereupon he pushes Cliff into the sea against Rogelio’s wishes. We’ve seen this before and that’s why Yancy was suspended at the beginning of the series.
Nick tells Eve of a new plan: he will fake his death and create a new identity to evade the FBI. Izzy chops off his arm so they have the remains and then manipulates the arm to make it look like it was killed in a boating accident. He pays Phinney, the captain, to make sure the fishing boat finds him.
After the plan succeeds, Nick hides on Andros. He meets Yaya, who asks him about his missing arm, but he is rude to her. This arouses the ire of Yaya’s granddaughter, the Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith), who has a confrontation with Nick’s bodyguard Egg and warns him off.
Phinney contacts Nick to ask for more money and he does, but Eve wants to tie up the loose ends. Reluctantly, Nick puts on a yellow poncho and shoots him. Nick then visits Izzy to invite him to Andros, but learns that Izzy is about to confess her love to Yancy. So Nick kills Izzy too by placing the yellow poncho in his bathroom and using the same gun he used to shoot Phinney.
Afterwards, Nick is furious in a parking lot, lamenting that he killed his best friend. Just as this happens, Heather, the weather girl, walks by and overhears Nick’s confession – Eve then shoots her! This explains why she disappeared in the last episode.
Back to the present
News of Heather’s murder comes to light. Also, Mendez calls Rogelio to tell him that Phinney’s murder is connected to Izzy’s. However, the Miami cop believes that Phinney was Izzy’s dealer, whom Izzy killed before committing suicide. Rogelio is not convinced.
At the morgue, Yancy and Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) discuss this and agree that it was not suicide. Then their romance blossoms and they sleep together (still in the morgue!).
At the beach, Eve mentions to Nick that Yancy could still cause them trouble… and then says that Caitlin could too. Nick gets upset because Eve wants “Caitlin taken care of,” and Eve pretends to be misunderstood and gets upset, but it turns out she’s just faking it.
Mendez receives a visit from Izzy’s neighbor, who saw Yancy coming out of the apartment shortly after the murder and identified him as such.
That evening, Yancy calls Rosa at home and tells him a new theory: he somehow has the feeling that Nick has just cut off his arm and changed his name to Christopher. But when he hangs up, he is attacked from behind: Nick is standing behind him, holding a crowbar.
