Thompson receives wildcard for the US Solheim Cup team

Thompson’s nomination marks her seventh consecutive appearance in the Solheim Cup and could well be her last, as she has announced her plans to retire at the end of the year.

“I know what Lexi can do in a Solheim Cup and that definitely helped her get selected,” Lewis said of her decision to select Thompson.

“She is someone who will help the team a lot, on and off the golf course. With her experience, everyone on the team will be watching what she does to try to learn from her. I am very happy to have Lexi back.”

Thompson, meanwhile, said it was “the greatest honor one can receive” to represent the United States again.

“To be back there this year, especially in the U.S., is a dream come true,” Thompson said.

“Being able to play alongside my teammates and under my captains and vice-captains is everything I could ask for.”

Thompson, 29, has a 9-7-7 record in the Solheim Cup and is one of only two U.S. players on this year’s roster who have been part of a winning U.S. team in the biennial tournament.

The Americans will try to win the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2017.

Europe, winners in 2019 and 2021, defended the title last year after a thrilling 14-14 draw with the USA at the Finca Cortesin in Malaga.

Kupcho, 27, is competing in the Solheim Cup for the third consecutive year. Although her last tournament win was in 2022, Kupcho has been in consistent form in 2024, recording three top-five finishes since May.

Schmelzel, 30, will be a Solheim Cup rookie after posting four top-10 finishes this season.
