WARNING – GRAPHIC CONTENT: Astonished doctors had to perform an operation to remove a massive 1.6 kilograms of metal from a woman’s stomach.

The 22-year-old patient had suffered from abdominal pain for a week before being admitted to the hospital and had vomited after every meal.

Sonography and X-rays revealed metal in her stomach, which was then operated on and removed by surgeons at the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital in India.

During the 75-minute procedure, surgeons removed necklaces, nose rings, earrings, jewelry, bracelets and anklets and also found 90 coins and a wristwatch.

Dr Siddhartha Biswas, the head of the surgery department who led the operation, said the woman had swallowed items made of gold, copper and brass.

It is suspected that the woman, who is undergoing psychiatric treatment, may have stolen the items from her brother’s costume jewelry store.

“We noticed that the jewelry was missing. But every time we asked her, she started crying and wouldn’t say anything,” her family said.

The woman’s mother added: “Despite keeping an eye on her, she somehow managed to swallow all these items. She has not been well for the past two months.”

“Before we admitted her to Rampurhat Government Hospital, we had taken her to various private doctors and she was given medication, but to no avail.”

Dr Biswas confirmed that the patient from Margram in West Bengal was in stable condition and would be discharged soon.
