I tried McDonald’s $7 breakfast special and IHOP’s $21 breakfast special. I was impressed with the fast food chain, but the pancakes weren’t comparable.

  • I ordered Breakfast at McDonald’s and IHOP to see which restaurant has the tastiest food.

  • McDonald’s had great biscuits, sausages, and hash browns for $7, but the pancakes weren’t that great.

  • IHOP’s $21 meal consisted of the usual sausage and eggs, but the delicious pancakes won me over.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so I wanted to see if the different prices at different popular chains made a difference.

I decided to compare the breakfast dishes of the fast food chain McDonald’s and the restaurant chain IHOP to find out which restaurant offers the better food.

This is how they perform.

I started at McDonald’s and ordered a large breakfast of hotcakes.

I got a good amount of breakfast food at McDonald’s for only $7.Joe Opaleski

For $7, McDonald’s got a big breakfast with hotcakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, a bread roll, a sausage patty, and hotcakes (pancakes).

The food was brought to my table in less than two minutes, which was convenient.

The star of the meal was the hash browns from McDonald’s.

I really liked the rösti for breakfast at McDonald’s.Joe Opaleski

I found that McDonald’s hash brown patty tasted a bit crispier and greasier than the chain’s French fries, which I really liked.

The crunch was great and the taste was incredible.

My scrambled eggs were just ok.

I wasn’t particularly impressed with McDonald’s scrambled eggs.Joe Opaleski

I got my scrambled eggs without any side dishes, but McDonald’s provided salt and pepper packets.

The eggs also had a good consistency and the portion size was larger than I expected.

The only downsides were that they were a little cold when they got to me and I think they would have tasted better with cheese.

The sausage patty from McDonald’s was delicious.

The McDonald’s sausage patty was full of flavor.Joe Opaleski

I couldn’t have asked for a tastier sausage patty. Its fat seemed to seep into other foods on my plate, but that didn’t bother me because it added flavor.

If you go to McDonald’s for breakfast, I would recommend the sausage instead of the bacon or Canadian bacon.

I used the cookie to make a breakfast sandwich.

The McDonald’s cookies were compact and good for a sandwich. Joe Opaleski

McDonald’s breakfast sides were almost like a deconstructed breakfast sandwich, so I made my own with bread rolls, eggs, and sausage patties.

The dense and buttery texture of the cookie worked well as a base for my impromptu sandwich.

The pancakes didn’t really convince me.

I didn’t like the consistency of McDonald’s pancakes.Joe Opaleski

I like fluffy pancakes, but the ones at McDonald’s seemed a bit chewy, so I wasn’t such a big fan.

I will refrain from adding these to my breakfast order from the chain in the future.

Next I went to IHOP and ordered a similar dish.

I ordered a meal from IHOP that was most similar to McDonald’s.Joe Opaleski

The closest thing to my meal at McDonald’s was the quick 2-egg breakfast from IHOP.

For $14, the plate included two eggs of your choice, two slices of sausage or bacon, hash browns and two halved slices of toast.

I added a small stack of three pancakes, bringing my total before tip to $21.

It took about 20 minutes for the food to arrive, but that’s what I expected in a restaurant with rather down-to-earth service.

The hash browns from IHOP were crispy and flavorful.

I was pleasantly surprised by IHOP’s hash browns. Joe Opaleski

Unlike McDonald’s oval hash brown patty, the potatoes at IHOP were thinly chopped.

From the very first bite, they were particularly crispy on top and tasted excellent.

The scrambled eggs were more cooked than I like.

I wasn’t a fan of IHOP’s scrambled eggs. Joe Opaleski

My eggs looked and tasted overcooked compared to what I normally like. They would have benefited from more salt.

If I were to order IHOP’s scrambled eggs again, I would probably choose different seasonings.

The sausages at IHOP were standard.

I didn’t notice anything wrong with the sausages at IHOP.Joe Opaleski

IHOP offered sausages instead of meatballs.

They had a traditional taste, but I didn’t really notice them.

I enjoyed the toast, but I would have preferred a breakfast sandwich.

I would have preferred a breakfast sandwich rather than individual side dishes.Joe Opaleski

I successfully used IHOP’s toast to soak up the grease from the sausage, but other than that, I didn’t find the side dish all that exciting.

I expected only the best from IHOP pancakes.

I had high hopes for IHOP’s pancakes and they did not disappoint. Joe Opalieski

The pancakes at IHOP met my expectations because they were much fluffier than those at McDonald’s.

I had already destroyed half of the small stack before I could even start on the rest of the record, so in that respect the chain clearly won.

The delicious pancakes from IHOP sealed my decision.

Breakfast at McDonald’s was quick and cheap, but IHOP takes the edge.Joe Opaleski

Although McDonald’s Big Breakfast had an incredible hash brown patty, I was won over by the pancakes at IHOP.

Other menu items were pretty comparable between the two chains. But McDonald’s pancakes didn’t have the fluffy texture I like.

Although the plate at McDonald’s was cheaper and faster, the breakfast at IHOP was better.
